If you haven't tried them, my usual go to is either Cathedral Character Overhaul or Real Humans and Beasts. I've tested out several and those are the 2 ive landed on. Cathedral overall i think looks the best, while RHB some of the faces are a little too 'pretty', but not overly fake and plastic like some. Cathedral is ~620 MB, RHB is ~280 MB.But your skin texture choice makes a huge difference too, because most overhauls use your own skin textures. For a less smooth and more rugged look I would recommend Skysight for men and either Northbourne Maiden or Lucid for women. There's also Nordic Faces, Cathedral and Diversity for an even more vanilla look. Start with {{Diversity - A Character Overhaul}} or {{Cathedral Player and NPC Overhaul}} as a base since they overhaul every NPC afaik. There's also WICO and Nordic Faces (and a few others) but IMO Diversity is just a straight improvement over WICO, and Nordic Faces makes women look too samey.And then I found this post about {{Cathedral NPCs}} working nicely with VHR. I checked out Cathedral's files as well and they are exactly as you've described - head and hair glued into a single mesh. So I tried both mods and they work nicely together too. And Cathedral uses high poly vanilla hair instead of vanilla.
